Special Callsign for the 10th Anniversary of the Gotthard Railroad Base Tunel, active from 01.06.2026 to 31.12.2026.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a record-breaking railway tunnel in the Swiss Alps. At 57 km (35.5 miles) long, it is the world's longest and deepest railway tunnel. It connects Erstfeld (Uri) in the north with Bodio (Ticino) in the south, providing a fast, flat, low-level route through the mountains. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

• Depth: Reaches up to 2,450 meters (over 8,000 feet) beneath the Alps
• Travel Time: Trains zip through the tunnel in just 20 minutes, dramatically speeding up travel between northern and southern Europe.

Why is it so important?

• First "Flat" Alpine Route: Unlike older mountain rail lines that require steep climbs, the base tunnel is completely flat, with its maximum elevation at 549 meters above sea level. This allows for longer, heavier freight trains and removes the need for multiple engines to push cargo up steep grades. [1, 2, 3]
• Environmental Impact: It was built primarily to shift heavy freight traffic from roads (lorries) onto eco-friendly rail lines, significantly protecting the Alpine environment. [1]
• European Connectivity: It is a core part of the Rotterdam-Genoa freight corridor and cut the travel time between major economic hubs like Zurich and Milan down to just under 3 hours. [1, 2]

Construction

Opening in 2016 after 17 years of construction, it was a monumental feat of engineering. Crews had to bore through incredibly hard granite and challenging squeezing rock, while managing extreme subterranean heat reaching up to 46°C. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Note: Do not confuse it with the older, parallel Gotthard Tunnel (an 1882 rail tunnel) or the Gotthard Road Tunnel (which carries cars and trucks and is infamous for holiday traffic jams). [1, 2, 3]

HB8/HE8 - Special Prefixes - SWITZERLAND

The "Union of Swiss HF Amateurs" (USKA) celebrates its 80th anniversary and thus Swiss HAMs are allowed to use the special prefixes HE8 and HB8 during the year 2009. Owners of an amateur radio licence class 1, 2 or CEPT may use the special prefix HE8 (instead of HB9) from Jan 1 until Dec 31, 2009. Owners of a licence class 3 may use the special prefix HB8 (instead of HB3).
